Somerset in the wonderful West Country. The Blackdown Hills cover 350sq km. Designated an area of outstanding natural beauty. The place to come for country walks and enjoy the peace and quiet. Time doesn't even matter. You can discover architectural gems when you follow the Taunton Heritage Trail. The circular walk guided by brass plaques in the pavement leads visitors past great places of interest.
Taunton Castle sits at the heart of the oldest part of the county town of Somerset. The buildings date from the 12th Century onwards. Now home to the Somerset County museum. Bath place is a delightful narrow street of cottages and shops. There are all sorts of shops here as well as cafes and restaurants. A visit to Somerset wouldn't be complete without a trip to a cider farm.
West Somerset has a whole range of towns and villages, right across the district from tiny villages under 100 people to over 100,000. Watchet is an ancient harbour dates back beyond the Domesday book. With a tranquil harbour and Marina and a Jurassic Area where fossils can be found along the coast. Minehead is the largest town in the district and the start of West Somerset Coastal Trail. Minehead has a wide range of seaside activities. If you like to shop Dulverton is the place to go. It's got a whole range of beautiful shops. It has a medieval bridge which links you onto the riverside walks where you can walk past the old workhouse (now Exmoor National Park Head Office). The picturesque village of Porlock is surrounded on three sides by the hills of Exmoor. The beautiful medieval village of Dunster is has over 200 listed buildings with so much to explore.
